Responsive Web Design

53% of Internet users browse the web on a mobile device. If your website is not Responsive, you are missing an incredible number of website visitors. w3Infinity can help!

With a tremendous increase in the number of mobile and tablet users, responsive web design has become a necessity for any website. Responsive web design does not mean designing a separate version of the website for mobile and tablet devices. Responsive web design means that the website responds to the device from which the website is being viewed. Designing a responsive website makes a webpage look good on all devices mainly - desktops/laptops, tablets, and phones. Responsive web design is mainly about using HTML, CSS, and sometimes Javascript to resize, hide, shrink, stretch, enlarge, or move the content of a web page so that it perfectly fits into screens of all sizes.

Responsive websites can only be scrolled vertically and can never be scrolled horizontally. If a web page can be scrolled horizontally, then that web page is not responsive since all the contents of a web page cannot be seen directly in a single window.

Examples of Responsive Web Design:

If you are currently visiting this webpage "Responsive Web Design" from a desktop device and you would like to check whether this webpage is responsive, minimize your browser and you will see that the contents of this page fit perfectly into the browser window. The following are the three examples of responsive web design. The following images show that the content of the webpage perfectly resizes to fit into a desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

  • "Responsive Web Design" - Desktop View:

  • The first step to designing a responsive website is to design a website for a desktop or laptop devices. Most web designers first design a website for a desktop device and then work on to make the website responsive to tablet and mobile devices. The screen size for a laptop and desktop device is greater than or equal to 1200px. The following image shows what this web page looks like in a desktop/laptop screen.

  • "Responsive Web Design" - Tablet View:

  • The image below is what this web page looks like in a tablet device. The screen size of a tablet device is equal to or great than 768px and less than 1200px. Unlike the desktop view, the tablet view contains a toggle menu. This creates a nice user interface that makes it easier for visitors to navigate our website. Hence, providing a great user experience for our visitors.

  • "Responsive Web Design" - Mobile View:

  • The screen size of a mobile device is less than 768px. As you can see in the picture below, the navigation menu looks much like that of the tablet view. But the contents of the web page are stacked and aligned on top of each other. Doing so, visitors can smoothly scroll down to see more contents of the web page, hence providing a great user experience.

Responsive web design is unavoidable:

Responsive websites are compulsory for any business that want to reach more customers. Mobile and tablet devices have become so common today that every 7 out 10 people carry these portable devices. These devices are widely used by the consumer market to browse the internet. Brick&Mobile reports that more than 52% of internet traffic comes from a mobile device. 53% of internet users use mobile devices to access search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing at least once a day. And that 68% people use a mobile device to find a local store. (source: Brick&Mobile) A report by Statista predicts that 2.53 billion people own a smartphone in 2018 and that there will be more than 2.87 Billion smartphone owners in 2020. (source: Statista) Therefore, responsive web design is the present and future of digital marketing and revenue growth of a business.

  • Google's recommendation for responsive web design:

  • Google's recommendation for responsive web design

Search engine giants including Google, Bing, and Yahoo clearly mentioned that it will punish websites that are not responsive. Since these search engines constantly strive to deliver the best possible results to their users, a responsive website is one of their major importance. This is because a responsive website makes it easier for users to share and link to the content with a single URL. Google also mentioned that a responsive website is a major ranking factor and plays an important role in search engine optimization (SEO). Therefore, responsive web design should not be avoided at any cost if the business's desire is to rank higher on search engines and become more visible on the internet.
